Milwaukee Children's Choir
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Position: Information Sciences Intern

Hours per Week: 10+ hours/week
Compensation: Unpaid, college credits may apply

Reports to: Executive Director, Darcie K. G. Warren

Preference will be given to UWM's School of Information Studies's students, for which this internship will count as fieldwork credit under the direction of Chad Zahrt.

Internship Description:
The Information Sciences Intern is an unpaid, project-based, and career-specific internship for the Milwaukee Children's Choir. This position may qualify for field work under the supervision of Chad Zahrt, Assistant Dean of Student Services. Within the project site, the intern reports to the Executive Director.

Internship Timeline and Schedule:

  • The organization currently seeks interns to begin as soon as possible and work throughout the Spring 2017 semester. A Fall internship would be considered, too.
  • The organization allows for flexible schedules to accommodate a student's needs and offices are generally open Mon-Thu, 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Requirements: 

  • This internship involves some physical tasks – applicant must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Applicant must have a cell phone, reliable means of transportation to travel between location within Milwaukee (primarily Bayview and downtown).
  • Note that offices are typically open for business Mon-Thu, 8:30am-5:00pm. Student is responsible for setting schedule to complete projects.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing Information Sciences degree and desire for practical work experience in the field.
  • Strong technical computer skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization skills a must.
  • Ability to progress on project independently.
  • Interest in nonprofit sector, specifically, interest in music, arts, or art education a plus.

Project Objectives:

  • Catalog extensive sheet music collection, housed at Milwaukee Youth Arts Center North of downtown.
  • Catalog printouts and paperwork, housed in storage room adjacent to main offices in Bayview, and purge files according to bylaws.
  • Investigate Customer Management (CRM) tracking software, and make recommendation to leadership for investment to be made in FY 2017-18.
  • Draft project brief detailing finished work for delivery to the Board of Directors.

Cross Training:
Milwaukee Children's Choir interns, administrative staff, and leadership work as a team to implement office operations, which may include:

  • Setting up and staffing special events and concerts.
  • Promoting fundraising efforts.
  • Assisting in filing and mailing projects.

General Expectations for All Milwaukee Children's Choir Staff:

Internal Relations:
All MCC staff members are expected to foster team building throughout the organization, ensuring effective relationships and open, ongoing and effective communications among internal constituencies. All of MCC's administrative staff are "cross-trained", and help each other at various times of the year when there is work overflow.

External Relations:
All MCC staff members are expected to develop and maintain ongoing and effective relationships in the community and beyond, e.g. serving as a spokesperson and advocate for MCC; ensuring effective relationships and open, ongoing and effective communication among MCC, performing/educational arts peers, the greater Milwaukee community, and the media; and helping to increase awareness of MCC and enhancing its image within the greater Milwaukee community. All MCC staff members interact with youth and are expected to be good role models and mentors.
